Kine Each week said “Brand new strong ‘crooks slip out’ is actually peopled which have a colorful variety out-of vital and you may arresting letters, and they, skilfully controlled from the copywriter and you will director, permit the film so you’re able to tread liquids effortlessly. It’s just to your find yourself it begins to break apart, nevertheless smack-upwards finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it has zero great issue from inside the life down its extremely unsightly label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin told you “The film movements at an easy speed, brand new talk is advanced and you can characterisations essentially active. Penis Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes direct the cast professionally, since investigator is actually used considerable aplomb by the that person personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody in the The fresh new Yorker indexed “This terse and tight motion picture noir is according to this new romantic and elite issues of your own identity profile, the latest violent mastermind (played because of the Penis Powell) at the rear of a fashionable illegal local casino. New film’s copywriter and manager, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess video game, to own mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) worked at gambling establishment and you can dated an effective corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh cast’s suavely controlled body language regarding love and you will threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will smartly cocky images (plus their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really outlined spectacle a low profile classic of one’s genre.” [ ten ]
Diversity gave the movie kudos, writing, “This will be a sensible whodunit, having focus on scripting, casting and you will camerawork lifting they above the mediocre. Pic has activity and you can suspense, and you will certain small suits out of jokes to incorporate flavor. Ace shows from the Dick Powell, since a playing home overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, as a police inspector, in addition to within the score . Even though the plot follows a common development, new characterizations try fresh in addition to performances good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog was terse and you can topical, preventing the emotional, phoney touch. Strange camera bases appear now and then so you’re able to escalate notice and briefly arrest the attention. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling given that manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, modern creator and you can associate producer, also helps with making it a silky design.” [ eleven ]
Film critic Bosley Crowther offered the movie a mixed remark, criticizing it having sluggish pacing, writing, “Although sluggishness and standard confusion of your own patch for two-thirds of the flick does not lead to well-known adventure, while the shallowness of mystery regarding who may have starting all the new killing relieves it of every great suspense. It is generally a point of watching Mr. Powell go through their paces fashionably while you are a big shed out-of actors and you will actresses render him typical assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the great absolutely nothing woman who brings about the newest best in him and Ellen Received is the smooth and you can slinky vixen which gets your into jams. Thomas Gomez try fatty since villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do a new in a position journey since the a weary police inspector just who fundamentally shuts the case. A great amount of taking and you may puffing is done by every alarmed.” [ several ]
Philp French, composing in the Observer said: “It scarcely found film noir ‘s the chill, controlled directorial first of left-side journalist whom went on and then make for example classics because the Most of the the King’s Dudes additionally the Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
